I love writing challenges; don't you?
Last writing challenge, you were to write a story about a hike that you went on, and something had to go wrong. The winner of the competition was Keir.
+rep to the worthy competitors (Quinn, Oxinated, and Mikey).
Spoil yourself to read his story
A "Hike". That's how I had billed it to my parents. At fist they seemed skeptical until I told them my destination at which they scoffed; Gamestop. I had only been there for a short time browsing through the new releases and making idle forced conversation with the clerk who eagerly awaited my departure so he could close up early.
Night had come on fast and with it came a heavy rain that pelted the roof with a rhythmic banging akin to a loud set of drums heralding an ancient army. I toyed with the decision of buying what I needed and leaving but the lazy part of me kept me in the store awaiting a parse in the downpour.
After another ten minutes of browsing I realized I could put if off any longer and approached the counter with my I.D. and wallet in one hand and my selection of games in the other. Suddenly the light flashed and without warning the bulbs exploded. I had just enough time to cover my face from the shards of glass that covered both me and the teller.
"What the hell was that?!" Cried the clerk angrily, followed by a string of swears that could make a sailor blush and a frantic search for the emergency flashlight in the dark.
"I don't know... felt like a power surge" I offered back, to be met by the harsh glare of the emergency flashlight. I shielded my eyes and the clerk pointed the flashlight away.
"Sorry 'bout that" he said sheepishly before walking out from behind the counter and towards the large panes of glass that made up the front of the store. I followed suit, noticing that the heavy rain was now coupled with a dense fog. After several moments of silent gawking at the fog which showed no sign of breaking, I could make out the faint outline of a person trudging slowly towards us. The clerk moved to open the door for the figure but I blocked him with my arm.
"Something doesn't seem right about this" I muttered, receiving a baffled look from the clerk before a gasp of understanding. The figure walked with its arms out stretched towards us, face covered by a low hanging hood for the rain. His pace was uneven and his steps uncoordinated. He was now but a few steps away from door and with a final lurch he threw himself against the glass, the action causing his hood to fall back and reveal the grisly sight which it had held. The man's eyes were pure white with the exception of several bulging red veins. He sported a once stylish goatee now caked in blood and gore. We stepped back, disgusted by what we saw. I was about to cry out but the clerk was one step ahead of me.
"That's a zombie man!"
The zombie opened its mouth and cried what could only be described as an inhuman feral shout. Suddenly there were more of them, each pounding on the glass without care for the damage to themselves and creating small cracks. I realized that we had mere seconds before the glass would break and we would be at the mercy of the undead. Luckily the clerk had a plan. He rushed over to the left side of the store and began dragging what I recognized as the metal fence put in place to prevent robberies while the store was closed. He managed to pull it about three quarters of the way across the store before the glass gave way. The zombies lunged through the new entrance and shambled closer to the clerk, still valiantly dragging the barrier to it's hitch at the other side of the store. He was about to lock it in place when several arms shot through the opening, blocking the way.
Without thinking I ripped the leg off of a life sized statue sitting at the entrance as advertising for one game or another. The leg was sturdy, and that's all I was looking for. I swung the leg like a bat at the flailing arms, driving them back just long enough for the clerk to lock the gate.
We sighed in relief, both of us backing away from the barrier whose each opening now housed a zombie's arm grasping at air trying in vain to reach us. The moaning and howling of the undead was deafening (not to mention the stench), so with a nod from the clerk we retreated back into the staff only room. We closed the door, muffling the sound enough to give us a little peace, and simultaneously checked our cell phones.
"Nothing" We said in union as I silently cursed my terrible reception. We were quiet for a while after that, each thinking hard about what we had just seen. It was me who finally broke the silence.
"So we're stuck here with no food and nothing to do?"
"There's a mini fridge with a few snacks in it, nothing much but enough to keep the hunger away. And I wouldn't say we have nothing to do..." The clerk shined his light at the wall which reflected off the packaging of hundreds of nintendo DS's "I figure each one has about two hours of battery life. Now normally you'd have to pay for them but I reckon that under these circomstances I can make an exception.
I grinned at him, grabbing two of the boxes from the wall and passing another back to him. We each sat in a corner and flipped on the systems. It sure as hell wasn't paradise, but it would was enough for the time being.
The next story is going to be a continuation of Keir's.
Let me transition it for you guys, though, so you have an open-ended writing prompt:
l
Playing Nintendo DS, I thought we were set for life! Playing those games really passed by time, and made us forget what we were hiding from! All of the sudden, THUD! THUD! THUD!
"They're coming," whispered the clerk. Then I remembered: the zombies.
"What do we do?" I asked.
l
Continue the story from that point on.
Prize is 20 points towards the competition, and your storyline will be featured as the continuation for the campaign.
Good luck!
Competition will end Saturday, September 11.
WOO! Thanks for choosing my story, I had a real itching to continue it. This wasn't the direction I had planned on taking the story but now I feel like it's the direction it needs to go. Lol. Also I needed to leave the ending open.
So enjoy chapter 2 of the unnamed story with zombies in it.
___
Thud. Thud. Thud.
The sound was like a bucket of ice cold water on my subconscious, harshly snapping me back into the grim reality of the situation. The clerk and I exchanged worried glances, illuminated only by the glow from our nintendo DS's.
"Do you think they got through?" The clerk asked, glancing worried at the closed door expecting it to break any moment with a flood of the undead.
"I don't think so, I think the fence would have a louder noise- you know?" As I spoke I climbed to my feet and took a step towards the door. I pressed my ear against it but only hearing the ravenous groans of the zombies. I decided to throw caution to the wind and opened the door just enough to see out into the main store.
Our makeshift barrier was still in place- but things weren't all good. The zombies unrelenting pounding upon the metal was taking its toll; the center of the fence had bent several feet deep into the room. My ears picked up the sound of it straining against the assault and I knew we had mere minutes before it gave way.
"We've got to get out of here"
The clerk was standing too now, his face stricken with worry. He glanced around the small storage room for several minutes before he spotted out salvation.
"The vents!" He cried with enthusiasm "We can pile some boxes up and climb into the ventilation system, maybe even get to the room!"
Without saying a word we both set to work. We piled the largest boxes (Each filled with consoles, it broke my heart to feel my feet crushing the Xbox 360 slims in our escape. I didn't feel so bad for the Wii's) near the vent and pushed a shelf to block the door. We had just finished when we heard the crashing sound of our barrier finally giving out.
"It's now or never" the clerk said, handing me his flashlight "You go first. I'll follow you"
With a grim smile I accepted the flashlight and climbed into the vent. It was cramped and dusty- a labyrinth of metal tubes and the zombies were its minotaur. Every inch was an accomplishment but I had to keep moving, if not for my sake for the sake of the clerk behind me. I could hear the zombies howling at the noise in the vents (which was by no means quiet) which only made the whole situation even more unbearable.
After what seemed (and may well have been as I didn't think to check the time) like hours we emerged on the roof, gasping at the fresh air but unable to take the time to enjoy it. Looking around I noticed that the fog had eased up and night had fallen. Aside from my flashlight I could see a few blurry lights in the distance. The clerk seemed to notice this too as he spoke up.
"Lights... Think that means more people?" he asked with a thin glimmer of hope in his otherwise solemn tone.
"I don't know. But it's our only shot- right?"
The clerk nodded at me and continued gazing out at the lights. I took the liberty of walking around the perimeter of the roof looking for anything that could help us. I found a couple pieces of broken pipe that I thought could be used as adequate weapons against the monsters below and walked back to the clerk. I handed him his pipe.
"I think I have an idea. If we can get off this roof and into the parking lot we might be able to get to my car. From there..." His voice trailed off. He didn't know what would happen next, neither of us did. But we both knew that sooner or later the roof would be swarming with the living dead and we couldn't wait that long.
"Alright. I noticed that the back of the store seems clear of them- but it's a long drop"
"I think I'll take my chances with the fall over the zombies"
So it was decided. We walked to the back of the store and looked down at the concrete below. I went first, lowering myself as much as I could with my arms and then letting go. I feeling of weightlessness enveloped me for a moment before being abruptly ended by the sharp pain of the ground. I stumbled but managed to stay upright, cursing under my breath.
Next was the clerk, lowering himself as I had done with his hands- but he slipped. I watched in horror as his flailing body fell to the cold ground with a sickening crack. I rushed over to him as he tried to stand.
"My knee!" He whispered with pain in his voice and tears in his eyes "It's- Ahh- I think it's broken"
His words hit me like a truck- the dire situation taking a sudden turn for the even worse. I grabbed his arm and slung it over my shoulder to support him. The first thing I noticed was that he was heavier than me and our progress towards the parking lot was slow. As we approached the a red truck (which the clerk had indicated was his) I heard the bone chilling cry from the undead. Craning my next I saw them behind us, mere meters away and gaining. I knew I couldn't outrun them with the clerk on my shoulder.
"It's okay- go on" He said whilst unwrapping his arm from my neck and handing me his keys "I'm not getting anywhere with this. Just... Find Kim. She's my sister"
I stared at him for a moment before taking the keys and running to the car. I reached it quickly and jumped inside. From the rear view mirror I saw the clerk holding his metal pipe like a bat with the undead inches away from him. I diverted my gaze and turned the key. The sound of the engine rolling over was drowned out by the clerk's battle cry and the sound of a fight. I briefly considered turning the car to defend him until a blood curdling scream made me slam my foot on the gas and ramp up over the curb.
The road was silent- a welcome change from the groaning and screaming of the parking lot. But it gave me time to think about things I didn't want to think about. I wondered about my parents, my friends, but mostly about this 'Kim'. The clerk had given his life to save mine- he could have let us both die there but he didn't. His only concern was of his sister. I knew then what I had to do; Kim was out there somewhere and I owed the clerk ("I hadn't even gotten his name!" I said to myself, but somehow it made his sacrifice seem all the nobler) at least that much.
"But how the hell am I supposed to find her?" I asked myself to break the eerie silence of the car. It was then that I noticed the car had one of those automated GPS systems. I quickly turned it on and searched through the address book, eventually finding the one marked "Kim". I pressed it and an orange line traced a winding path through the city and to an apartment building not far from the mall.
The ride continued in relative silence, the hum of the engine being tuned out by my intense thinking. I could feel time pass and my body beginning to feel the effects of being up all night- but I had to keep going.
Kim was waiting.

No; where did I say that the prize was rep points?
Rep is supposed to be given to those who have posts that truly deserve it. I felt that after reviewing the first competition's submissions, those with good stories were given voluntary rep by me.

Playing Nintendo DS, I thought we were set for life! Playing those games really passed by time, and made us forget what we were hiding from! All of the sudden, THUD! THUD! THUD!
"They're coming," whispered the clerk. Then I remembered: the zombies.
I instantly shut the DS and clicked the off button and stood up, I was shaking. I looked at the clerk I saw him follow my lead, shut, click, put down.
We agreed to take a few packs of new DS's just in case we need some entertainment, who knows how long this will go on for.
THUD THUD CRAAAACK
The wooden door, now with a giant hole with a head poking through. I took a minute to have a glance, I regretted this. He was blonde, are was, his hair was stained with a red substance, blood, after I noticed this I thought
"Zombies aren't real I've seen movies but, this is impossible! I wonder if scientists are working on some kind of cure"
I saw the clerk he had a sledgehammer I shouted to him "Where did you get that?!"
"Round the back, we can't just run we need to fight, here!"
He threw me a hammer, halve the size of his mammoth, I just said to myself sarcastically "Oh, how thoughtful."
He went to the door and opened it, he under estimated the amount of Zombies there was. Hundreds, his face fell.
"RUUUUUUUN!" I screamed.
We ran to the back door, it was changed impossible to open.
"Where's the key!" I screamed frantically.
"In the front I left it there!"
I turned around then looked back at me and said,
"Good luck I will go in and kill them off once I go in count to 10 then run outside and get to a safe place, ring the police, board up windows and doors," he instructed.
"Dude, it's suicide!"
"You have your whole life ahead of you-" he stopped we heared a loud ROAR from the door, they we're pretty much face to face with us. "Good luck." He said, then he ran in....
I heard another ROOOOAAAAR! then counted to 10 then ran.....

Playing Nintendo DS, I thought we were set for life! Playing those games really passed by time, and made us forget what we were hiding from! All of the sudden, THUD! THUD! THUD!
"What was that?" Fearing for the worst I get up and slowly make my way towards the wooden door standing between life and death, with the Nintendo DS in hand I try to calm my breathing.
As I am shaking with fear all over I pull the doorknob to the left, as the door creaks open I see the cage we set up has held nicely. I spoke too soon, as the cage gives way I see zombie hands reaching out for me, as I quickly pull out the Nintendo DS from my pocket, "here goes nothing," as I mutter to myself. As I switch the DS on, the glare of the Nintendo DS light holds back the deafening zombie's. Then, the light fades to a blackness, just as I mutter, "Oh no!"
"RUNNN FOR YOUR LIFEEEEE!"
As I yell caring less who hears my cries I run into the room I had recently come from, as I shut the door, I grab the clerk and run, but he doesn't. "What are you...," as I am stopped in mid-sentence the door then gets smashed through, I then see a zombie head sticking out. As I look around the room I spot a fire hydrant, I then spray the chemical substance into the zombie's face, not sure if it had any effect I then grab the end of the fire hydrant and bash it into the zombie's head.
Making haste I grab the store clerk and pull him with all my might. "Come on, come on," I say to the clerk, with barely enough breath to talk I stop in my attempt to run away.
THUD THUD CRACK!
As the wooden door falls to the ground in pieces it is followed by an angry mob of zombies waiting to strike on their prey, the mentally disturbed clerk and I. With the motivation to move I spot the exit door, this should trigger some emergency assistance, only one problem, the only route to that door was over the mountain of boxes filled with games and gaming systems. As I look in utter despair I know what needs to be done.
Making box debris as I and the clerk climb on top of what seems of a million boxes we both look at each other will fearful eyes. I then start grabbing at boxes and throwing them down behind me, I create a diversion for the zombies to figure out, "we'll see how intelligent zombies really are," I mutter to myself. As my plan turns to be a success I focus on the other task at hand, getting out of this horrid battle zone and out into the open.
As we then make it over to the exit door, we find that it is locked. I desperately scream "Hurry, hurry, get this door unlocked!" "I'm sorry, I left the keys at the front of the store," the clerk replies. "No no this can't be happening," I scream uncontrollably. The clerk then uses his mind and spots an ax meant for displaying for the new game releases.
SMACK SMACK SMACK
It takes three tries of metal hitting the steal of the door hinges before the door falls down. Revealing the night air we so desperately awaited, we waste no time getting out of the doorway. As we see zombies plunging from opposite directions of the building we run. It has not stopped raining and there are puddles everywhere. As we run on the pavement I hear a smack from behind me. Skidding to a stop I look behind me and see the clerk unconscious. I look up at the swarm of zombies but I couldn't just leave him there.
"Oh crap, I'm done for," as I say to myself and all hope seems to have drifted away...I am suddenly blinded by a source of light...

Hey! please excuse my story, I wrote it in sixth grade! LOL!
__________________________________________________ ________________________
We sat in that little store for hours and hours. I even think a whole day passed by. After sitting in there we very soon lost all of our food. I had no choice but to use the door and hike back to my house. So that is what I did. I used the stores back exit and ran to four blocks to my home. Over there I quickly opened the front door with my keys rattling from the fear of the zombies. After about what seemed a really long time I finally got the door open and run up the main stairs to my room. I locked the door shut and took a seat on my bed. But that little paradise of me laying down on my bed ended too soon. I again heard that very freaky noise of the zombies groaning.
I screamed! At the door were thousands of zombies that were equipped with axes, chainsaws, knifes, and guns. I almost fainted from the horror! I ran upstairs to the attic and opened the door. I remembered that my father had his "emergency guns" in the old metal chest in the end of the room. I noticed that it had no lock on it. I was very surprised. then I figured out that my father had probably left it open for my use. I slowly opened the chest up. I took out the sniper, shot gun, and machine gun. I then loaded them with the bullets which were also in the chest. I then put the sniper and shot gun in my holsters that were a bit to big for me. I also found them in the big old chest.
I slowly walked down from the attic with my machine gun. I walked into my room. I then crawled over to the window I ducked down below the window and charged my weapon. I pointed the gun out the window at the zombie with the chainsaw. BOOM! The zombie fell down. Then all the zombies suddenly glanced over to my face popping out of the window. But they had a and idea, the stupid things started breaking my door. I ducked down below the window again I got hold of my shotgun. When I looked out my window, they were rushing into my house. I had to think quickly so I looked around my room. I thought about making a rope so i ripped my bed sheet into long pieces and then tied them together. i tied the end of the bed sheet rope to my window sill. I threw the rest of the rope down to the side walk. I grabbed my shotgun and the end of the rope, climbed out of the window, and then down to the sidewalk.
When I came tot he bottom of the rope, I jumped onto the concrete sidewalk. I ran for my life. When I looked back I saw the zombies chasing me. I stopped and started shotting at the zombies with my shotgun. I shot till the very last bullet. Then I took out my machine gun and shot the hell out of them. Most of them died, but some were still alive. i took out my shotgun. i aimed at the zombies; I shot them into little pieces. After ten minutes of shooting them up, they finally all fell onto the road. When I started to run forward, guess what I saw? More blood thirsty, nasty, zombies..........

ONLY A FEW MORE HOURS TO SUBMIT!
We sat up in sheer panick, the only sounds in the room were the bleeping of the game on the DS’s. Looking at each other, we automatically stampered up and moved to the back of the room. Hearing the sound of them approaching was disgusting, the squelching of their dirty feet, the moaning and wailing of hunger was like nails on a chalkboard. The time now we had to escape was crutial. I frantically looked around the small room, looking for a weapon of choice, successfully finding a genuine hockey stick, covered in signatures. I guessed this was a precious belonging to the store and ripped it from it’s proud place on the wall. They were coming closer, I could hear cracking of plastic cases and smashing of glass beyond the thin, breakable walls of the staff room.
“They’re completely physco.” Whispered the clerk, crouching into a small ball waiting for impact. I looked at his terrified face, he was a young looking guy, his brown eyes searching in horror, he didn’t belong here, he looked too.. out of place.
“Are there any other possible ways we can escape? Think, hard.” I said through my quivering lips. He looked at me in deep thought, then burried his face in his knees, mumuring to himself.
“Actually, I do remember the boss telling me something about a secret storage room, where he kept his illegal stuff and his belongings. I could never get down there to have a look, otherwise I would have been murdered.” He admitted sheepishly. “It’s under the fridge.”
“Thats perfect!” I shouted, eyeing off the fridge. It looked like a retired washing machine and probably weighed 4 times my weight. “Lets give it a go.” Placing the hockey stick down I ran and collected another box of DS’s, some random games, then to the fridge and found bottled water, pickles and a few packets of crackers. I put it all in a plastic bag and tied it to my hockey stick.
“I need a hand.” The clerk called out to me, his face purple in strain. I joined in and evuntually pushed the tank like fridge off of the hatch. The clerk jumped in first, very clumisly, then I followed placing a plastic garbage bin over the hatch, hopefully covering the evidence. It was dark, dark as midnight. I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and shone it around the room. I found the light switch and flicked it on, the clerk grunted and closed his eyes at the now bright room. The place looked like a trashed supermarket, it was amazing.
“This is incredible!” We said in unison. There was usable goods everywhere I looked, left, right and centre. Things like fireworks, whips, rifles and anything else that was worthy of being illegal. I walked towards a foggy glass tank, to my fright, contained an oversized python. It’s massive jaws snared at me, it’s teeth connected with the glass, leaving a large scratch. I backed away instantly and ran into the clerk, yelping in fright. He simply laughed at me and pushed me.
“Do you think we can survive down here? Atleast to kill some of those horrible things?” He said to me, pointing his finger upward.
“If we find the right stuff, it’s possible.” I nodded. As I began to talk again, we both instantly stopped before a huge object, covered in blankets. We both smiled and began to remove the blankets, one by one.

Yup, click the second spoiler in it.
...So completely changing the original story from plot to atmosphere filling it with plot holes and retconning half of what I typed originally is better than then what I wrote?
That's just a blight on my work. I'm honestly insulted. If I couldn't win twice in a row you should have said something instead of having me write a long story to be beat by a five minute tale that doesn't even relate back to the original.
You don't further a horror story by deus-ex-machina-ing a room full of supplies, the whole point is the hopelessness and the danger!
Have fun butchering my story, I'm done.

First off, don't talk down to me. People have a habit of thinking they're something because of the color of their name recently and it's ticking me off. We're on the same playing field you and I and you could at least speak to me like an adult instead of a small child.
Secondly all I want from you is an explanation, if you want to confine that to a private message feel free. I'll be waiting.

Idea: The first winner cannot win again but will be presented as one of the judges for the continuous challenge.
Ex: Keir won the first time so he can't win again, but he as well as you (Kyle) will judge the next round.

Yeah...:)
I said what I had to say in the PM kay. I considered posting it here too but honestly it seems everyone knows what's up so I won't waste my time repeating what everyone knows- even if you insist on lying to me.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to twist your story. I just imagined what came to me.
Anything can happen when you imagine, plus nothing is perfect. Sorry if I hurt your feelings but it was my imagination and if you'd like to talk to me about how I write, I'm open for discussion :)
BTW - Thanks :happy
It's not about how you write it's about the judging process. But if you'd like me to pick apart your story or bring up literary concepts you don't understand feel free to PM me.
