View Full Version : Poverty - Save ourselves first or third world countries?
Some people feel that countries that can afford it should be sorting out their own poverty issues before attending to third world countries and the poverty there.
So what do you think? Should wealthy countries be sorting out their own poverty problem before lending a hand to nations that cannot afford to do it on their own? Or should wealthier countries be putting the poorer nations first and helping them before helping themselves?
I see foreign aid as a part of the solution to fight global poverty. Foreign aid is a tool, but one that is vulnerable to waste and fraud at every level. For those who are in immediate need whose governments cannot provide them with food, medicine, and housing, this aid can mean the difference between life and death, particularly for children. It can also provide for projects that will improve the overall lives of Third World citizens if used judiciously by their governments for projects that provide improvement for the greater good by building infrastructure and investing those resources for the good of the people, especially those most in need. However, the possibility of corruption and graft is high. Without adequate monitoring and follow-through, foreign aid can be little more than a political panacea by more wealthy countries.

If the rest of the world goes down the ****ter, so does your own country. Isolationism doesn't work.
Now, I'm not saying that a country should focus on other countries and turn their back on its own people, but a wealthier countries can continue to lend aid and support to other countries, while still tending to their own domestic issues.
So basically, I'm choosing the neither option. Countries don't have to choose one or the other. They can help themselves, while also helping others.

I don't think there should be a overall rule for every nation in this world to aid other countries or not. If a nation chooses not to help their neighbors then sure, there's nothing wrong about that. However I would surly recommend countries who have more money in their pockets to aid the less fortunate nations because maybe one day the aided countries will help them.

Well, it depends what is happening in their own country. If the country is in condition they should be helping other countries.
Then again, This aint a perfect world now, Is it?

Monetary wealth is overrated. Once Canada throws out capitalism I feel as if the lives of Canadians will be greatly improved and we can begin to really focus on aiding developing and otherwise socially austere countries. I'm talking about access to fresh water, sustainable agriculture, implementing basic human rights, better educational opportunities, etc.

If we were to wait for our own countries to be perfect and fine before helping others, we'd never get to the point of helping others.
We're still generally living better lives than people in Africa. Of course, our own countries have their own issues, but other countries are having more issues.
